ARINC SelfDrop Trials at Bristol Airport

Passengers using Bristol Airport and easyJet this month can look forward to a streamlined check-in and baggage experience following the commencement of a trial of Rockwell Collins’ latest self-service baggage solution, ARINC SelfDrop.

Twelve ARINC SelfDrop self-service kiosks and four bag drop counters have been located in the easyJet check-in area, and assistance will be provided if necessary by airport staff.

Self-service bag drop delivers greater flexibility within an airport environment and gives passengers greater control of their journey. Airports and passengers benefit from significantly reduced queues and passenger processing time in a single or two-step system that delivers options for both dedicated and common use solutions.

Paul Hickox, head of Airport Systems Sales for Rockwell Collins, said, ‘There is no ‘one-size fits all’ bag drop solution because different airlines have different passenger processing models. We were able to create the best solution for Bristol Airport because of our deep understanding of airports and bag drop technology. We look forward to seeing the new self-bag drop solution from Rockwell Collins have a positive impact for passengers as it has done in all other deployments in recent months.’

Reducing travel time and increasing passenger experience

The trial, underway since 12th July 2017 with easyJet at Bristol Airport, will take place during the busiest period for both the airline and the airport, and is expected to cut travel time and enhance passenger experience.

Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK Country Manager, said, ‘We recognise that our customers’ airport experience is a hugely important part of their overall journey and so we are delighted to be part of Bristol Airport’s self-service bag drop trial. As we approach the summer, our busiest time of the year, we want our customers to have a seamless journey through the airport, enabling their summer holidays to get off to the best of starts.’

How ARINC SelfDrop will operate at Bristol Airport during the trial:

  • easyJet staff will check passenger travel documentation with boarding passes
  • Passengers will be directed to a self-service kiosk
  • Passengers scan boarding passes – either printed or mobile-hosted
  • Passengers place baggage within the kiosk to be weighed
  • Baggage tag is printed for self-tagging by the passenger
  • Passengers move the baggage to the bag drop area conveyor
  • Baggage tags are scanned and checked before the baggage is transported to the aircraft

Bristol Airport is already benefiting from the trial, and is receiving a positive response from passengers according to Phil Holder, Head of Operations Support at the airport. He said, ‘The trial is already speeding up the process for passengers and the initial feedback has been very positive.  We are always looking for ways to improve the passenger experience and this trial is an example of how the latest technology can enhance the airport journey.’
